As the captive insurer for the Government of South Australia, SAFA provides comprehensive insurance protection, advice and assistance to South Australian Government Agencies and Statutory Authorities.

SAFA is responsible for reinsuring these risks in the Australian and International insurance markets to safeguard against a catastrophic loss or claim or a series of large losses or claims in any one year. In addition, SAFA provides reinsurance to the private insurance market for South Australian Building Indemnity Insurance risks.

All Government Agencies and Statutory Authorities are required to take out insurance with SAFA unless specifically exempted by the Treasurer.

SAFA’s Insurance Services team is the key point of contact for insured Agencies and Statutory Authorities. It is responsible for:

  • Underwriting the South Australian Government self-insurance arrangements under the Agency Agreement.
  • The provision of risk consulting, technical and policy advice to the South Australian Government on insurance related matters.
  • Assisting Agencies and Statutory Authorities with the transfer of risk(s) to the commercial insurance market for one-off or specialised risks that are not covered under the Agency Agreement.
  • Managing the marketing and placement of the South Australian Government’s Catastrophe Reinsurance program.
  • The provision of other insurance-related activities as required by the Treasurer.
